Property for sale in the Algarve: Albufeira
The town of Albufeira, now one of Portugal’s hugely popular hotspots for tourism, has had a rough old time of it down the centuries. Firstly, it has been all but completely destroyed three times by earthquakes – in 1719, 1722 and 1755. In the last instance, tidal waves added to the chaos, but there has not been even a remotely threatening tremor since this 18th Century triple tragedy. Then in 1833, the town was razed to the ground by fire during a Portuguese civil conflict, resulting in a prolonged period of poverty and extreme difficulty for the people of Albufeira.
At least 2,000 years old, Albufeira was originally called Baltrum by the Romans, but renamed Al-Buhera by the Moors 800 years later. Today, the town’s past troubles are long behind it, as Albufeira is a prosperous town full of life, acting as a magnet to holidaymakers. Since the late 1960s, Albufeira has enjoyed expansion and development to turn it into not only a tourist Mecca, but also one of the prime areas in which to invest in property for sale in the Algarve.
Tourists flock to Albufeira seeking sun and good times, and invariably find exactly what they are looking for. This is a destination geared towards beach life and watersports during the day, and partying at night. As a resort famed for its beaches – 7 main stretches of beautiful sand, plus many smaller ones – Albufeira offers everything in the former respect. And in the latter, there are scores of good bars, cafés, restaurants and clubs open from sunset into the small hours, when the town bursts into life each and every night.
Albufeira is not really a destination to head for if you are looking for an abundance of cultural and historical interest, but there are a few attractions of note. The labyrinthine older part of the town – all that remains since the earthquakes – is impeccably preserved: its atmospheric narrow streets lined with whitewashed dwellings make for a relaxing stroll and escape from the buzzing main town. There are a couple of interesting museums, a few ancient churches and picturesque nearby villages, but Albufeira is more interested in showing you a good time than giving you a history lesson!
