Property for sale in the Algarve: Aljezur
The lovely market town of Aljezur in West Algarve, although small, remains the focal point of the beautiful municipality of the same name. Just a few miles inland from the coast, it is a town that has been inhabited for eleven centuries since originally settled by the Moors. Divided into two halves by a picturesque river valley, Aljezur is set in amongst the most stunning and tranquil countryside in the whole of Portugal. The old half of the town is dominated by what is left of a Moorish castle, sat on top of a hill from which there are commanding views of the area. The newer, and more populated half lies on the other side of the valley.
History has left some interesting artefacts in Aljezur town, including the charming Misericordia (Mercy) Church and a 16th Century pillory. A very interesting insight into the town and region can be found in the Aljezur Municipal Museum, which traces the history of the area’s peoples from the earliest unearthed evidence in 7,000 BC.
Aljezur sits at the edge of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty that takes in around 80 kilometres of stunning coastline. It provides a paradise for lovers of wildflowers and birdlife, is dotted with quaint rural villages and boasts amongst the most spectacular beaches in Europe. Even on the coast, where sea fishing and surfing are very popular, there is a true sense of tranquillity unmatched in Portugal – and most anywhere else. For those seeking spectacular coastal and hinterland scenery as well as peace and quiet, Aljezur could well be for you.
Due to the region as a whole remaining consistently popular with British tourists and property investors, property for sale in the Algarve is rarely on the market for very long.
