Property for sale in the Algarve: Lagos
Situated just inland from the coast (but still close enough to beaches) in West Algarve, Lagos (meaning ‘lakes’: pronounced ‘lah-gush’) is an ancient town of historical maritime significance, having once been capital of the Algarve region and at the heart of Portuguese 15th Century exploration. Now a town of 15,000+ inhabitants, tourism has been the main industry here since the 1960s, with the traditional industry of fishing a respectable second.
Lagos (which, if you are wondering, did indeed lend its name to the former Nigerian capital) is the centre of the Lagos municipality, a picturesque area comprising three very distinct regions. These are coastal (litoral), where most of the municipality’s population live and work; interior (barrocal: largely agricultural) and mountain (serra). The town of Lagos provides access to wonderful beaches and some of the prettiest countryside in Portugal, and is also one of the most desired areas in which to invest in Algarve property.
The beaches have something to do with this – boasting soft, white sand lapped by clear turquoise waters and caressed by cooling breezes. Meia Praia, especially, is a Mecca for sun worshippers, as the sea is calm (so perfect for watersports) and it looks out across one of Europe’s biggest bays. Dona Ana Beach is also very popular with tourists. There are even three beaches next to each other that have the quirky added attraction of being linked together by tunnels through the dividing rocks! One of these is surely Portugal’s, maybe Europe’s oddest named strip of sand – Praia da Batata: ‘Potato Beach’!
Lagos can claim to have amongst the best dining and nightlife in the Algarve, with dozens of excellent bars, clubs and restaurants. Be sure when visiting this area of the Algarve to try the local specialities: Morgados and Dom Rodrigos are delicious fig and almond biscuits, while connoisseurs of alcoholic beverages will appreciate Lagos Moscatel wine. Be careful, however, with Aguardente de Medronho – a spirit with the kick of a mule, and considered the Algarve’s take on moonshine!
