As a general rule, the price of property for sale in the Algarve falls dramatically the further you are from the sea. Generally prices are about a fifth more expensive than in Spain. The Algarve, along with Lisbon, are main areas popular with overseas buyers.
Portugal has long had a 'special relationship' with Britain that goes back over 600 years making it the longest lasting alliance in Europe. England provided the Portuguese with a queen when John of Gaunt's daughter, Philippa of Lawcaston married King Joao I in 1387. The compliment was returned when in 1662 King Charles II of Braganca married the daughter of King Joao IV. On the commercial side the port wine trade is very much a joint Anglo Portuguese venture and a strong British presence has existed in Oporto, the centre of the industry, for more then 300 years.
In recent times the temperate climate has lured many British people to choose the property for sale in Algarve as their home. On the one hand there are those who have capitalised on the tourist boom, opening up hotels, rental villas, restaurants, bars and discotheques and on the other there are more elderly people who have decided that Portugal is the perfect place to retire.
The property for sale in the Algarve is very popular expatriates and in reflection of this, several of the major resorts feature more English bars and cafes than Portuguese ones. Thirty years ago however the pleasures of the Algarve were a well- kept secret. This was then a region of sleepy fishing villages where the sight of a stranger world cause intense curiosity. In 1965 when Faro airport was opened, there were just three first- class hotels. The tourist room reached its peak in the mid 1980's but now the emphasis is on the "quality tourist" rather than purely volumes. A good deal of money has been invested in infrastructure with faro airport recently being enlarged and the main east/west motorway the N125, now covers the entire width of the Algarve region.
