Property for sale in the Algarve: Tavira
In East Algarve, Tavira is an ancient town left with the marks of many civilisations. Its origins date back over 4,000 years, and it has been considered a very important town for many reasons down the years – not least because it was once a major centre for fishing, and a port shipping goods such as wine, dried fish and salt around the Mediterranean. Today, Tavira is one of the Algarve’s most attractive towns, particularly in an architectural sense. A lot of the town was destroyed in the huge earthquake of 1755, but a few buildings and monuments predating that catastrophic event still remain alongside those that have been constructed since.
Many of the 'newer' buildings in Tavira date back to the 18th Century, and it is these that make the town so very attractive. For a small town, Tavira also has a lot of churches – 37 in all! Tavira is in two parts either side of the River Gilao, connected by an ancient bridge. It has been thought for centuries that the bridge was of Roman build, but recent surveys have set the record straight in establishing it as of Moorish origin.
Once named Baal Saphon after a fearsome Phoenician god, and later Balsa, Tavira now houses 20,000 residents, and is a conveniently-located town from which to explore the peaceful surrounding rural areas and a number of interesting villages. Two villages nearby that cater almost exclusively for tourists are Pedras del Rey and Cabanas; both are on the seafront, and make for relaxing destinations. Luz de Tavira, Santa Luzia and Cacela-a-Velha are tiny, unspoiled villages that represent traditional rural East Algarve life, and are worth visiting for their tranquil atmospheres alone.
